Alameda County’s Black Infant Health Program (BIH) offers long-term case management services to support at-risk pregnant and parenting African American women and men.
BIH program goals:
  • Reduce deaths of African American infants, including deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

  • Increase first trimester prenatal care visits by pregnant African-American women.

  • Provision of health care services during the perinatal period for African American women and children.

Black Infant Health Role of Men Program (ROM) provides in-home or office case management services on pregnancy/parenting education, social support and male responsibility.
ROM program goals:
  • Teach fathers how to assist the mother in having a full term and healthy pregnancy

  • Help fathers create healthier lifestyles by eliminating or modifying at-risk behaviors such as smoking, domestic violence, stress.

  • Increase awareness of healthy nutrition and household gender responsibility.

 
Program Eligibility:
Pregnant and parenting African American women and their partners who are residents of Alameda County and have children under 12 months of age.
 
Useful Information and Services:
What makes a pregnant woman at risk?
  • Little or no prenatal care

  • Drinking, smoking or using drugs

  • History of pre-term labor

  • Ongoing medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, STDs and sickle-cell anemia

  • Stress

  • Poor nutrition

  • History of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.)

Black Infant Health and Role of Men Programs offer:
  • Referrals to health and social services

  • Information on job training; counseling, GED/high school diploma completion

  • Monthly home or office visits by a Public Health Nurse and/or Community Health Outreach Worker

  • Social support & empowerment classes

  • Role of Men case management for fathers

  • ROM Workshops

  • Baby Shop / Family Circle

  • Transportation assistance to medical appointments

  • Prenatal/postpartum education
