Acute Communicable Disease & Sexually Transmitted Disease Control works in partnership with the medical and neighborhood communities to control and prevent the occurrence and spread of communicable and sexually transmitted diseases through prevention, surveillance and outbreak control. The program aims to:
  • Successfully interrupt and contain the spread of communicable disease clusters and outbreaks

  • Conduct surveillance for over 80 communicable diseases and disease syndromes

    • Investigate disease outbreaks and recommend control measures

    • Conduct special studies and projects

    • Produce annual reports, special analyses, and procedure manuals

  • Develop policies to address priority health needs

    • Set policy and make procedure recommendations for activities related to infectious and communicable diseases

    • Interpret and enforce State and Federal laws and regulations

    • Interface with other local, state, and federal agencies, professional societies, and program concerned with public health.
 
Program Eligibility:

Any Alameda county resident known or suspected to be infected with or exposed to a communicable disease.

  • What is a communicable disease?
    It is an illness caused by an infectious agent such as bacteria, virus, and toxins. California law mandates healthcare providers and laboratories to report over 80 diseases or conditions to their local health department. Some of the reportable communicable diseases include Hepatitis A, B & C, influenza, measles, salmonella, and other food borne illnesses.


  • What are sexually transmitted diseases?
    They are infections that spread through sexual contact. Anyone who has sexual contact with a person who is infected can get a sexually transmitted disease.li>

  • Which communicable diseases are reported the most in Alameda County?
    The five most frequently reported diseases for 2001 in Alameda County were:
    • 4681 reported cases of Chlamydia

    • 2038 reported cases of Gonorrhea

    • 1561 reported cases of Hepatitis B

    • 840 reported cases of Hepatitis C

    • 241 reported cases of Campylobacter
