What happens at RAC meetings?

Residents:

  • Meet resource people from the City, County, and other community groups
  • Get trained on how to be an effective voice for community change
  • Plan community-wide events like Earth Day (every April) and National Night Out (every August)
  • Take action on issues!

West Oakland RAC actions:

  • With support from the City-County Neighborhood Initiative, six West Oakland RAC members worked through December 2007 to develop, recruit and administer the Mini-grant program. Funded mini-grant projects included: Durant Park Halloween Party, baseball uniforms and basketball equipment for two local neighborhood teams, West Oakland youth shared the youth surveys and a yough etiquette development project.
  • The West Oakland blight committee has done street by street neighborhood assessments that led to: the clean-up of over 143 nuisance properties, closing down of a problem liquor store, and pedestrian safety "bulb-outs" on several streets to make crossing easier and safer.
  • The RAC also helped do a survey to determine whether residents would patronize a local green grocer. They have helped one liquor store to become a "green grocer" by carrying fresh produce.
  • Through the West Oakland RAC, residents encouraged City and State officials to take responsibility for the clean-up of a contaminated toxic site in the neighborhood. After extensive testing and preparation, the state is finally poised to begin clean up.
