CCNI Community Surveys

A critical part of our evaluation is door-to-door surveys with residents, administered in 2004 (baseline) 2007 and 2010. We tailored survey questions to each neighborhood, and had them translated into Spanish. For each survey, we had between 215 and 230 respondents.

The surveys had a core of set of questions that were assessed all three years, in the areas of:

  • Social demographics
  • Neighborhood characteristics (positive and negative attributes)
  • Social capital (civic participation, social cohesion, informal social control)
  • Perceived neighborhood safety
  • City responsiveness to community needs.

In 2007, we added questions about:

  • Whether people had heard of or participated in CCNI activities
  • Access to resources for healthy living
  • Opinions about neighborhood conditions and crime.

In 2010, we added different questions in each neighborhood. For Sobrante Park, we asked about H1N1 vaccination and barriers, in response to last year’s H1N1 pandemic. In partnership with the West Oakland Health and Safety Collaborative, we asked about access to transportation and safety at bus stops.
