Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

SIDSThe Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Program, in accordance with the State of California Health and Safety Code, Chapter 268, Statutes of 1991, ensures coordination, mandated follow-up and reconciliation of all reported county SIDS cases with Public Health Nursing.

Historical SIDS mandates also ensure that families and communities are provided with SIDS information and education. In Alameda County, the SIDS Program collaborates with Black Infant Health (BIH) and the Alameda County Healthy Start Initiative along with key perinatal service providers, community agencies and stakeholders to promote SIDS education and assure that staff is trained to provide accurate SIDS information

Target Audience:

  • pregnant and parenting women, men, and their infants
  • caregivers
  • community and faith-based organizations
  • community residents
  • health & service providers
  • emergency/health & safety staff

Eligibility:

Alameda County parents, family, or caregivers who experience the sudden death of an infant under one year of age -  which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including an autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history of the family and infant - will receive follow-up with our Public Health Nursing Unit.
