Why Do We Need a New Strategic Plan?

Alameda County residents are healthier than before in many areas. This may be in part due to our numerous programs and services. However, not all residents are benefiting equally from these improvements. Health inequities are defined as differences in health that are unnecessary, avoidable, unfair and unjust and contribute to this problem.

The root causes of these health inequities include poverty, racism, discrimination based on class and gender and other factors. These root causes create differences in access to things like good jobs, quality housing, good schools, health care, and safe neighborhoods, which in turn, affect the health of residents.

Through a participatory process, ACPHD has developed a long-term strategic plan that will guide us in addressing health inequities improving the health of all people in the county.
