The Sobrante Park Resident Action Council bridges two ethnic groups - African-Americans and Latinos. All monthly meetings are bilingual in English and Spanish and include time for cultural sharing.
What happens at RAC meetings?
Residents:
- Meet resource people from the City, County, and other community groups
- Get trained on how to be an effective voice for community change
- Plan community-wide events like Earth Day (every April) and National Night Out (every August)
- Meet in subcommittees to take action on issues, including:
- Creating a safer, more vibrant streetscape and parks
- Disaster preparedness
- Making Sobrante Park a better place for youth
A recent RAC success:
- Through the RAC, more than 200 residents have given input into a re-design of the "streetscape" around the entrance to Sobrante Park and nearby Tyrone Carney Park.
- They worked with landscape designer Walter Hood to develop blueprints and choose the best design. The new design includes areas for walking and gathering, and will increase pedestrian safety.
- The City of Oakland gave residents a $30,000 grant to continue this important work.
